Fix “Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance” Stuck in WordPress

Tested in the ShoHost fix lab on 12 October 2026: WordPress 7.1.3, PHP 8.4, Apache with MariaDB 11.8. Every screenshot below is from that lab, not from a customer site.

While WordPress installs updates, it creates a hidden file called .maintenance in your site’s root folder and deletes it when the update finishes. If an update times out, or you close the tab partway through, the file can be left behind and your site stays stuck on this message.

The message comes with HTTP 503 while .maintenance exists.

The fix: delete .maintenance

  1. In cPanel open File Manager → public_html (or wherever WordPress is installed).
  2. Click Settings (top right) → tick Show Hidden Files (dotfiles) → Save.
  3. Find .maintenance next to wp-config.php, select it, and click Delete.
  4. Reload your site.

The file only holds a timestamp. Deleting it brings the site back (HTTP 200).

After the fix: finish the interrupted update

Go to Dashboard → Updates and run any updates that didn’t complete. Update plugins a few at a time rather than all at once. If a plugin is now broken, delete it and reinstall a fresh copy. WP-CLI users can do the same with wp maintenance-mode deactivate and then wp plugin update --all.

Good to know: WordPress ignores a .maintenance file that’s more than 10 minutes old, so a stuck message that lasts longer usually comes from a cache. Purge LiteSpeed Cache (or your CDN cache) as well.
